Water or Bush?

A friend posted a graphic in my forums showing that every state (it leaves out Hawaii) that voted for Kerry was either connected to Canada directly, or through one or more other states that also voted for Kerry.
My thinking is that this is absurd, I can’t imagine that Canada has that kind of effect on the voting habits of our country. (ethnocentricism?) Looking at the maps, it seemed that all of the states voting for Kerry were connected to large bodies of water, either an ocean, or the Great Lakes. Looking at the county returns from the states, this is pretty well supported. It is mostly the coastal areas of these states that voted for Mr. Kerry.
On further investigation, this trend seems to be more accurate on the west coast, where the coast is also the concentration of population density (urban areas). Supporting, of course, the idea that city-folk voted for Kerry, and country-folk voted for Bush.
